We created our initial class of pilot members in January 2009 with ten participants spanning a wide variety of food products. Our pilot clients went through the SEED Corp business planning course in order to get a deeper understanding of what it takes to start a new business. Our board president Bobbi Boos sat in on the class and provided supplemental information pertaining to the development of food products, such as health code requirements and nutritional labeling.
Several of our pilot members came together to create a brochure (linked below) and to table at Luna Fest, a celebration of local women-owned businesses. They offered free samples in order to get feedback on their developing products and to promote their businesses as well as the Bloomington Kitchen Incubator.
Over the summer, several of our pilot members decided they were not ready to actively pursue their food businesses at this time. However, two of our pilot members are going strong and we are in the process of recruiting new members to participate in the Spring 2010 SEED Corp business planning class and to be ready to start production when the Middle Way kitchen opens in April.
